RosA? wine in the Apulian region

Apulia is like a small universe of RosA? wines, and each corner of the region is suited for different grape varieties.


RosA? wines from the Salento enhance the king of the area, Negroamaro. Thousands of vineyards, with their respective wineries, are in the so called a�?Negroamaro areaa�?. The southernmost part of Apulia produces a wine with a light purple colour, from varieties with a very juicy pulp known in the past under the name of a�?Lacrimaa�? (a�?Teara�?), because the more mature grapes tended to split and to a�?crya�? profusely. In the “Grecia Salentina” (a�?greek salentoa�?), an area where the greek dialect “griko” is spoken, you can find exceptional varietals dedicated to rosA? wine making, characterized by a sandy-clay soil. RosA? wines in the Taranto area, instead, come from Primitivo di Manduria, which brings freshness and tannins, making them ideal for several food pairing. Other widely used grape varieties in this area include, Sussumaniello, Montepulciano, and Malvasia.


Ita��s written Itria Valley but often read “trulli”, ancient buildings known worldwide for their characteristic shape, an example of Italian popular architecture. In the Taranto area coexist Primitivo and Negroamaro; in the area of Gioia del Colle, there is the RosA? DOP which requires a large percentage of Primitivo, and the IGP, which allows to also include other varieties such as Aglianico or Aleatico. The typical reddish soil of this area allows to produce a unique RosA� wine with an intense cherry colour, and an excellent balance between acidity and flavours. It is a delicious rosA? wine which has some violet highlights. There is then a typical rosA�, produced with Montepulciano, delicate and fresh, with a slight citrus notes.


The hinterland of Bari, home to farms devoted to almond and olive oil production, also makes a pale pink colour RosA� wine with a copper tinge, characterized by hints of red fruit, as opposed to the rich and fragrant wines of the Castel del Monte area and produced with Bombino Nero grapes. In the north of Bari, the land that once belonged to Frederick II, between the coast and the murgia areas, rosA? wine is produced from grapes harvested in the evening hours to preserve its flavors: this is the area where the Uva di Troia reigns, one of the most traditional varieties of Pulia. The results of these vines are wines with great body and structure, complex and harmonious, with a light ruby a��a��red colour that turns into light orange after aging. RosA� wines of this area are also those from the Gioia del Colle Primitivo, characterized by great acidity. Their alcohol content, is often close to 14%, making them ideal to pair with meat main courses.


In the Daunia area and the so called a�?Capitanataa�?, the main protagonist is the plain of the Tavoliere, also known as the “granary of Italy”, home of durum wheat and famous for the epic “transhumance”: in the past, during the summer, farmers took their animals in the mountains in Abruzzo, only to return in Puglia during fall, along “sheep tracks” and stopping at “mail stations.” To the east, the sea, in a beautiful and fascinating panorama. In the north, we find the a�?Foresta Umbraa�?, woods with similar characteristics to those of alpine areas. Specialty of the area are the rosA� wine from grapes Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero: smooth and delicate on the palate, but with the right acidity and excellent to pair with a fish meal.
